Hope against dumb, inert factiticy

It can provide the building blocks with which we build an ethical or existential outlook, but the task of constructing those values is ours and ours alone.  This is not to say that hopelessness is an illegitimate response to the horrors of history—it clearly is one response. But to hope or not to hope is our existential and ethical choice, not one compelled by the facts of history.”
